“As per Section 26 of Parliamentary Elections Act, the Electoral Commission has set 22 and 23 December 2020 as dates for conducting fresh nomination in the electoral areas where death recently occurred of a nominated candidate for MP and Local Gov’t Councils Elections,” said Mr. Bukenya.
The Electoral Commission has set Tuesday and Wednesday next week to conduct fresh nominations for Members of Parliament and local government council polling areas where nominated candidates die.
The E.C Acting Spokesperson, Paul Bukenya made the revelation on Saturday afternoon saying it is a constitutional provision to organize fresh elections.
The EC also extended condolences to the families that lost their loved ones who had already been nominated to participate in the general elections happening early next year.
“We extend heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, fellow citizens of Uganda & the people in the affected electoral areas on the bereavement caused by the untimely death of the nominated candidates. We pray for the souls of the departed to rest in peace,” he concluded.
A number of incumbents and candidates have died since the nominations in October.
The Kamuli municipality MP, Rehma Wetongola succumbed to COVID-19 on November 14, 2020. She was standing on independent ticket after losing in the NRM primaries.
The Kyotera Woman MP, Robina Ssentongo Nakasirye succumbed to COVID-19 on Friday this week from Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi. She was standing to retain her seat in Parliament.
Former Masaka woman MP and a candidate for the same position in the coming elections, Freda Kase Mubanda died on Wednesday.
