The Electoral Commission has for the second time extended the period for the updating of the National Voters Register.
The Commission last week extended the exercise for 5 days, which run out today, Monday.
However, in a brief statement, the EC said it was pushing the exercise for another 7 days from today 16th up to the 23rd December 2019
The EC Spokesman Jotham Taremwa told ChimpReports on phone that a number of factors had prompted another extension.
One of the reasons he said was the heavy rains that have been pounding different parts of the country, preventing many people from turning up.
“We also got recommendations from our own staff on the ground about many people who said the first extension was not enough,” he said.
“The staff said they have been sitting at the centers with few people coming and now many more have started pouring in.”
Other stakeholders, Taremwa said, also asked for the deadline to be extended, mostly heads of political parties.
Taremwa however, says this will be the last extension and that there will be no more windows for the voter registration and updating.
“We don’t want anyone to have an excuse that they did not get enough time.”
