East African Court to Get New Judges

There will be presentations from Mr. Sam Zimbe, Mr. George van Der Merwe, the Capital and Contracts Department General Manager, Mr. Simbiso Chimbima, the Chief Technical Officer and Mr. Selestino Babungi, the Chief Financial Officer.

In 2013, Umeme started to invest US$440 million in the distribution network and increase its customer base to 1,000,000 by the end of 2018.

The additional investment financing will support Umeme’s investment programme aimed at strengthening the distribution network to cope with the current demand and in preparation for new generation from Karuma, Isimba and others planned by Government.

It is also expected to reduce energy losses and increase distribution efficiencies, access to electricity through new connections, financing the national prepayment meters rollout; and driving safety improvements and enhancements.

Regional leaders will further consider the appointment of new Judges of the East African Court of Justice; designation of a new Principal Judge of the East African Court of Justice and the appointment of a new Deputy Secretary General from the Republic of Burundi to replace Mr Jean Claude Nsengiyumva, whose tenure of office will end in April this year.

Leaders are also expected to renew the contract of Hon. Jesca Eriyo, Deputy Secretary General in charge of Productive and Social Sector and consider a report on selected priority matter.

The change of Chairmanship is also anticipated at the 16th Ordinary Summit. The Republic of Kenya is the current Chair of the regional bloc.

The 16th Ordinary Summit is expected to be attended by Presidents Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi, Yoweri Museveni, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame and the host, Uhuru Kenyatta.
