DP Holds Delegates Conference to Elect Party President

The Uganda Police has finally cleared the opposition Democratic Party (DP) to hold it’s Delegates Conference in which it will elect the party President.

ChimpReports understands that by last evening, the party had not yet secured clearance from the police.

However, speaking to ChimpReports this Friday morning, DP presidential press secretary Fred Mwesigwa confirmed securing police clearance.

“Yes, we have been cleared,” Mwesigwa told ChimpReports.
Asked why till last evening the Police had not cleared the Delegates Conference to take place, Mwesigwa said, the two parties were still negotiating the number of delegates to attend.
In a bid to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Mwesigwa said the number has been reduced from over 2,000 to 500.
“We were just negotiating the number. Our delegates are over 2,000. We agreed to reduce the number to 500. So, social distancing and spacing, we can afford it,” he said.
The Delegates Conference taking place at Sir Samuel Baker primary school in Gulu district will see incumbent President General Nobert Mao re – elected for yet another five year term.
ChimpReports understands that it is only Mao who picked and returned nomination forms for the position of the party President.
His challenger and former Buikwe South Member of Parliament Lulume Bayiga has since dropped DP presidential ambitions to contest on Buikwe South parliamentary seat.
Apart from electing party President, the Delegates Conference will also elect 55 members that form National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
Mwesigwa also revealed that the Delegates Conference will amend the party Constitution to create new positions and make Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) the official youth wing of the party.
“We are going to pave the amendment of the Constitution. There are things we have to amend for example Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), we are proposing that should be the official youth wing of the party,” he said.
All the five Divisions that make Kampala will be made districts.
“The new positions that will be created include; the disabled, International relations and diaspora, Secretary for workers, Secretary for veterans, Secretary for entrepreneurs, Secretary for elders among others.
