Domestic Violence: Police Sets Up GBV Call Center as Cases Rise

The Child and Family Protection Unit, a police department in charged of Gender Based Violence has set up a public call center for people to report all cases related to domestic violence and child abuse.

The development comes amidst the increasing number of family and domestic cases registered by the law enforcement body especially during this Covid-19 pandemic period.

According to Police, the unit has been actively making follow ups on cases of domestic violence and abuse that are reported at different units across the country.

“The response has been done in support with UN Women who were able to set up a national GBV call center which is at the national command center in Naguru,” spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed.

Enanga said that the centre is to purposely register all cases of GBV from the public.

The centre line 0800199195 is said to have started operating in May this year and it works 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

From January to June, police revealed that the unit has recorded 11955 cases. Out of them 2017 cases were referred to local council authorities while the 5559 cases, the parties were counseled by police teams.

Over 2500 cases are still under investigations while 605 were taken to courts of law.
