Doctors’ Strike Leader, Dr Obuku Attacked at his Gate

Police have commenced investigations into circumstances under which the vocal leader of Uganda Medical Association, Dr Obuku Ekwaru was attacked at his residence in Wakiso District on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred in Kitikifumba, Kiira division at around 11:00pm.

“It is alleged Dr Ekwaru Obuku was attacked at his gate as he waited for it to be opened and his phone was robbed in that same area,” said Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigire.

“Joyce Akiigwa, who has been identified as the mother to Dr Ekwaru was robbed of her hand bag that contained money and some documents from her home,” he added

Police described the incident as an act of “aggravated robbery.”

Dr Obuku recently led a medical officers’ strike in Uganda over poor remuneration and lack of logistics, paralyzing the health sector.

Detectives are expected to establish if the attack is related to Dr Obuku’s advocacy work.

Relatives said Dr Obuku sustained injuries in the attack was hospitalized on Thursday night.
