Deputy Speaker Oulanyah Launches Tree Planting in Omoro

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah on Monday launched tree planting drive in Omoro district.

Oulanyah who is also the area Member of Parliament for Omoro Constituency camped at the area over the weekend to spearhead the tree planting initiative meant to address climate change effects.

He told his voters that forests cover have been hugely been depleted over the years without replacement.

“When I was growing up, I used to cross streams and rivers to go to school. Tamarind and shea nut trees where everywhere now we have nothing,” said Oulanyah.

He appealed to the communities to work together to conserve Omoro district and cautioned locals against indiscriminate tree cutting for charcoal burning.

“If indeed charcoal sell was the solution to our problems, then we would not have our children and ourselves lacking basic needs. We must recognize that it is not the solution and in fact only increasing our problems,” noted Oulanyah.

He added that the prolonged dry spell that Acholi sub-region and the whole country suffered recently might get worse if nothing is done and called upon the locals to urgently embark on tree planting.

“My plea is that for every one tree cut, plant at least 5. Let’s act now while we still have the opportunity,” stressed Oulanyah.
