The Democratic Party has denounced the Justice Simon Byabakama led Electoral Commission for allegedly conniving with the National Resistance Movement to declare Geoffrey Wandera as winner of the Busia LC 5 seat amid a court injunction.
Addressing journalists at City Hall on Tuesday, Kenneth Paul Kakande the DP Spokesperson said his party had lost faith in the current electoral commission which he described as an “extension of the ruling National Resistance Movement”.
“As DP we are deeply disappointed with the electoral commission. They (electoral commission) are there to advance the interests of NRM and President Yoweri Museveni,” Kakande ranted.
Geoffrey Wandera who was an NRM leaning independent candidate in the race was declared unopposed by the commission last week, after the remaining two candidates dropped out of the race two days to the election. The two, DP claims, were paid by NRM.
The Commission had earlier kicked out the DP and NRM candidates Deogratius Hasubi Njoki Paul Boniface Oguttu from the race on technical grounds.
Speaking in response to the DP concerns however, ColShaban Bantariza the deputy government spokesperson advised DP to petition respective courts other than engaging in cheap politicking.
Bantariza says there is no way the NRM can influence decisions of an independent body such as the electoral commission.
“There is no influence whatsoever. What they can do, let them prove those allegations and avoid making politicking allegations”, Bantariza told Chimpreports.
Meanwhile, Kakande poured scorn on plans by the government to institute a constitution review commission which he says is not inclusive.
Poking holes in this arrangement, Kakande faulted government for ignoring positions that were earlier agreed upon in previous Inter-Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) meetings and decided to go by those that best suit their interests.
As such, he says this arrangement is a ploy by President Yoweri Museveni to further entrench himself in power.
“You cannot rape the constitution and then pretend to review it. Nothing can emerge out of the Constitution review commission, it is meant to hoodwink Ugandans”, Kakande explains.
In response, Shaban Bantariza says that the opposition parties must come clean on their demands and stop acting cagey.
