Covid19: Army Disperses Burial Gathering in Kabale, Bishop On the Run

The burial of the slain Kabale businessman Amon Paddy Amanya was on Saturday stopped midway by security led by the Kabale RDC Darius Nandinda, for defying President Yoweri Museveni’s directive on Coronavirus.

Amanya is believed to have been murdered by unidentified assailants on Tuesday and his body dumped on the roadside near Kigezi highland tea factory in Kitumba Sub County.

The body was taken to Kabale Hospital mortuary, from where it was brought on Friday evening to his home in Bugongi, in the Northern Division of Kabale Municipality.

The family then awaited the arrival of Pastor Johnson Bakashaba, the Bishop of Revival Outreach Ministries who was in United States.

Bishop Bakashaba, who arrived in Kabale from USA on Thursday via Kigali International Airport had ordered that Amanya’s body be kept until he arrives to preside over the funeral service.

On Saturday, hundreds of mourners gathered at Emmaus Bible School playground in Bugongi, Nothern division and the burial service kicked off.

However, as the service carried on, heavily armed security officials led by RDC Nandinda, together with Lt. Col. Robert Nahamya the Commander of UPDF’s 19th Battalion, Ronald Kasheija Byengyeru Kabale District Internal Security Officer, Augustine Nakitari, Officer-in-Charge of Kabale Central Police station and Patrick Besigye Keihwa, Kabale District LC5 Chairperson stormed the funeral service and demanded an explanation why locals had gathered with Bishop Bakashaba irrespective of the President’s directive.

On seeing security officials Bakashaba took off fearing arrest.

Officials were perturbed more after learning that the funeral service was being provided security by police officers attached to Kabale police station.

On interrogation, Sg. Kenneth Asiimwe, a police officer attached to Field Force Unit at Kabale police station who was immediately arrested, said they were deployed on orders of Dan Byaruhanga, Deputy Kigezi Region Police Commander.

Security officials also rushed to Bishop Bakashaba’s home in Makanga hill, but did not find him.

Lt Col Nahamya wondered why locals could not take the President’s directive serious yet it is aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

The RDC Nandinda condemned Bishop Bakashaba for misleading the public by presiding over such a big gathering yet President had on Wednesday ordered that such a burial service be attended by less than 10 people

Nandinda also faulted Bakashaba for crossing to Uganda without being inspected by Katuna and border health surveillance officials yet both USA where he was returning and Kigali where he landed have coronavirus cases.

“This is not acceptable. Pastor Bakashaba will be arrested and quarantined in a hospital and later be charged for defying President’s directive about ban on public gatherings.” Said Nandinda.

The security operatives immediately resolved to deploy at the home of Bishop Bakashaba to make sure that all his family is quarantined for 14 days.
