Senior paediatrician, Gelasius Mukasa has reportedly succumbed to covid-19. The deceased, who was aged 78, was the chairman of the National Newborn Steering Committee (NICU) and belonged to the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN).
He passed away shortly upon admission to the Mulago Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Mukasa’s wife had succumbed to covid-19 the previous week and he was not able to bury her.
Dr Sabrina Kitaka, a paediatrician at Mulago National Referral Hospital revealed that Mukasa was an inspiration to many other doctors.
“He inspired many of us to be paediatrics as a career choice and for that we are truly grateful. When I joined my Masters of Paediatrics, Dr Mukasa was our Head of Department, a duty he held with so much poise and grace,” she said.
Towards the end of last year, two senior doctors, Dr Fred Kigozi and Charles Kiggundu succumbed to the disease. The Uganda Medical Association revealed that at least 16 doctors have so far succumbed to covid-19.
The health ministry notes that Uganda is in 4th phase of the pandemic, characterized by community transmissions.
