Covid-19: Police Arrest 14 Looters in Kampala

Kampala Metropolitan Police has in custody 14 people; all mid aged males who were arrested while looting eatables from traders in the city food markets.

According to KMP spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango, the suspects were arrested from Nakasero market, and other downtown food markets.

The suspects, who also include homeless street kids, had started attacking vendors who had brought food stuffs to the market.

One of the videos that was highly shared on social media, showed a group of youths stealing from a pick-up truck that was loaded with pineapples along Nabugabo Street.

“These people thought that we were not alert but we are very alert. We managed to swing in action and deterred more of such criminality from occurring,” said Onyango.

He further stated that there has been reinforcements and deployment on all Kampala city streets to protect the food vendors and also to guard the closed businesses.

Onyango said that police is also on alert to arrest any persons especially boda boda motorists who will be found violating the presidential directive on public transport aimed at stopping the spread of Coronavirus.

The suspects are being held on charges of theft and will be charged in courts of law once they open.

Onyango has also cautioned the traders to be very vigilant especially when retiring from their work places due to changes in the transport system.
