Buganda Road grade one magistrate Robert Mukanza has released on bail Uganda Journalists Association President Hajji Kazibwe Bashir and three others who are charged with defamation against Pastor Daniel Walugembe.
According to prosecution, the suspects, Thomas Bagonza, Beatrice Nabwiire, Kazibwe Bashir and Hassan Ssegawa on 5th January 2019 in areas of Katanga near industrial area Kampala spread information damaging Pastor Walugembe Daniel’s name.
Mr Walugembe was reportedly trying to evict them from a contested piece of land.
In a fully packed court room, the four suspects applied for bail and presented three sureties, whom court found to be substantial.
Each one of the accused was released on a non-cash bond of 4 million shillings and the same amount for their sureties.
State Prosecutor in this matter Patricia Cyngtho had earlier asked court not to grant the applicants bail on grounds that the sureties they presented are not close enough to the court.
The trial magistrate in her ruling, ordered the sureties to deposit original copies of their national identity cards and for the accused not to continue with any discussion regarding the matter before court until its fully disposed of.
The case was adjourned to 28th March 2019.
This matter at first was privately being prosecuted but today the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) took over the matter.
