Court Orders Continued Detention of Hotel Rwanda ‘Hero’ Paul Rusesabagina

Kicukiro Primary Court in Kigali Rwanda has remanded Hotel Rwanda hero Paul Rusesabagina for more 30 days as prosecution concludes investigations.

Rusesabagina was arrested on August 31 at the Kigali international airport, according to the Rwandan government.

His family and international lawyer however, have maintained that he was kidnapped and subjected to extraordinary rendition from Dubai to Rwanda.

He has since been charged with 13 counts including Terrorism, Arson, and Robbery among others and is being held at Nyarugenge maximum security prison in Kigali.

“This court finds the request by prosecution to extend Rusesabagina’s detention for more 30 days justified, we have granted this request so prosecution can conclude the investigations so as the trial can begin.”  Theodosie Mukarugira the presiding Judge ruled.

Judge Makurugira noted in the ruling that the crimes Rusesabagina faces are serious and prosecution is allowed by law to seek extension should they feel the need.

Prosecution on Tuesday asked the court to grant orders to have Rusesabagina detained for more 30 days as they still needed more time to put together his file and that of his co-accused.

However, his defence team argued he should be freed on bail since he is sickly and be given strict rules to adhere to.

In her ruling, the Judge said, reasons given by Rusesabagina lawyers that he should be released to get medical attention are invalid.

“He can still get medication in custody,” she ruled.

Rusesabagina, his defense team and prosecution were not in court but followed the ruling online.
