Court of Appeal Dismisses Sejusa Aides’ Appeal

Court Martial of Appeal has Friday dismissed the appeal which was filed by six aides of former head of national intelligence General David Sejusa who were convicted of Treachery and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The six are Lance Corporal Grace Nasasira, Lance Corporal Geoffrey Karuhanga, Private Frank Ninsiima, James Nayebare, Moses Nuwagaba and Abel Twinamatsiko.

These were last year convicted by General Court Martial chairman Lt Gen Andrew Gutti.

They appealed against the conviction on such grounds as court’s “failure to evaluate inconsistencies and lies among Prosecution witnesses.”

These also accuse the court martial of allowing state to amend the charge sheet the third time after defence had filed their final submission.

In the judgment of the appellant court read by Justice Elly Turyomubona, all three members of this court concurred that none of the grounds of appeal raised by the appellants led to miscarriage of justice.

“Consequently we find no merit in the entire appeal and we dismiss it, uphold the conviction and since there was no appeal against the sentences that there were imposed by the General Court Martial we confirm them” ruled Turyomubona.

Addressing press later, the appellants’ counsel David Mushabe vowed to continue pushing for freedom of his clients up to the Civil Court of Appeal.
