The Anti-Corruption Court has temporarily stopped the criminal proceedings against Kawempe South Legislator and Chairperson of Parliament’s COSASE, Hon Mubaraka Munyagwa
Chief Magistrate Pamela Lamunu’s decision came after Munyagwa’s lawyer Kenneth Paul Kakande presented an order from High Court ordering the same.
Before this, State Prosecutor Alice Komuhangi Khaukha had asked court to issue a warrant of arrest for Munyagwa who had was not in court despite of the fact that he was served with court summons requiring him to appear and take plea on corruption charges
“Since the state has conceded to the order presented by the defence lawyers, this case shall be stayed as we wait for the outcome of the main cause that is set to be heard on November 11,” Ms Lamunu said.
According to the court order issued by the Assistant registrar High court Joy Kabagye, the Attorney General, his servants and all his agents have been ordered to stay and or halt the criminal prosecution against Munyagwa pending the hearing of an application in which he challenges being tried before the Anti-corruption court
Prosecution contends that in the December 2014 at Haks Investment Limited, being a Mayor Kawempe Division, Hon Munyagwa solicited for a gratification of Shs100m from Mr Francis Kakumba in exchange for him to exert improper influence over Kawempe Division Urban Concil to nominate Muyanja Isaac (S/O Francis Kavuma) for appointment as a member of Kampala City Land Board representing Kawempe Division.
Its further alleged that Hon Munyagwa in the same year received a gratification of $ 20000, an evaluate of about Shs73million from Mr Kakumba in exchange for him to exert improper influence over Kawempe Division Urban Council to nominate Isaac Muyanja (S/O Kakumba).
