High Court in Mbale has Monday afternoon issued an order blocking the Electoral Commission from gazetting Geoffrey Wandera as the new Busia District Chairman.
Mr Wandera, an NRM leaning independent candidate was earlier today declared unopposed by Umar Kiyimba, the district returning officer, after his remaining two contenders pulled out of the race.
Independent candidates Chripus Bwire and Tony Ojambo wrote to the EC, announcing that they were stepping down.
The Arua Court however, directed the EC not to gazette MR Wandera until an injunction application filed the Opposition Demotic Party DP is heard on December 16th.
The DP Candidate in the race, Deo Hasubi Njoki and that of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Paul Boniface Oguttu were thrown of the election on technical grounds.
Mbale High Court’s Deputy Registrar Lilian Mwandha barred the EC from “continuing with the election process and or filling the position of the District Chairman Busia District and gazetting and declaring winner (if any) until 18th December.”
DP claims the ruling party bought off the independent candidates Bwire and Ojambo to back out the race and leave Wandera unopposed.
The party through its spokesperson Rogers Mulindwa however, dismissed the allegations as false.
