High Court has asked government to pay Shs50 million to jailed Makerere University researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi as compensation for blocking her travel two years.
Justice Henrietta Wolayo on Monday ruled that police detectives violated Dr Nyanzi’s rights of travel when they blocked her from travelling to the Netherlands for a conference.
In July 2017, Dr Nyanzi sued government for blocking her trip and demanded for compensation for all her expenses that included a return air ticket, VISA costs and psychological torture inflicted on her.
In her ruling, Justice Wolayo said the government action was a violation of Dr Nyanzi’s rights and dignity and also ordered for a restraining order against government against further blocking the Makerere University researcher.
Immigration officials at Entebbe International Airport in 2017 stopped Dr Nyanzi from leaving the country over her Facebook posts in which she attacked both President Museveni and First Lady Janet for allegedly running down Uganda.
