DRC President Félix Tshisekedi has appointed General Major Christian Songe Tshiwewe as the new Republican Guard commander, Chimp Corps report.
The Republican Guard comprises Special Forces and other elite units tasked with the protection of the First Family and executing highly sensitive military operations.
Tshiwewe’s appointment was communicated in a notice by the presidency released Wednesday night.
Tshisekedi’s presidency has in recent weeks faces turbulent waves with a top advisor being arrested over corruption and a military intelligence commander dying under suspicious circumstances in the capital Kinshasa.
Tshiwewe takes over from General Ilunga Kampete, who was appointed in 2014 by former President Joseph Kabila.
Kampete was under sanction of the European Union over alleged human rights abuses.
Meanwhile, Tshisekedi also appointed Ephraime Kabi Kiriza as the Chief of Staff of the Republican Guard.
