Michel Rukunda, a colonel in the armed of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has defected to Ngumino rebel group mainly comprised mainly of Banyamulenge ethnic Tutsi.
Through its tweeter account Congolese army confirmed Rukunda had defected and taken over the leadership of Ngumino
“FARDC confirms the defection of Colonel Michel Rukunda, 2nd CO of the Walikale sector, to join the maquis where he allegedly took over as the head of an identity armed group known as the “Ngumino”. Rukunda is now considered an enemy of the DRC.” Congolese army posted on their twitter account..
Rukunda aka “Makanika” prior to his defection was the Second in charge of operations and intelligence in the Walikale sector in North Kivu.
Defection in by Congolese Army officers is not new. In 2013 over More than 2,100 army troops and 700 police defected to M23 Rebel group that was then fighting Kabila led government.
In other development A South African military plane crash-landed on Thursday at the Goma airport in North Kivu. it was coming from Beni when it experienced a breakdown in its downward phase hence crash landing.
