Government has confirmed that former UPDF Spokesperson Col Shaban Bantariza died of Covid19.
Col Bantariza passed away on Tuesday morning at 2am, at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
He had been admitted there in the Intensive Care Unit since Sunday.
Government spokesman Ofwono Opondo told reporters at the hospital this morning that medics had confirmed that Bantariza succumbed to the Covid19 virus.
Opondo had earlier revealed that the deceased died of hypertension.
“Earlier he had been complaining of chest pain, low blood pressure and cough.” Opondo said.
“He had originally been admitted on Friday Mbuya Military Hospital, from where he was taken to Victoria and eventually transferred to Mulago after they suspected that he could have contracted Covid19.”
“Upon carrying out medical examinations in Mulago, it was confirmed that he had contracted Covid19. I therefore confirm that indeed Shaban died of Covid19.”
Meanwhile the ruling National Resistance Movement party on Tuesday morning joined scores of Ugandans to mourn Col Bantariza
The Party Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba said they were “deeply saddened by the death” of Bantariza.”
“Col. Bantariza has been a loyal member of the NRM government and the party which he has served till his death. His commitment on duty and the honesty will highly be valued even after his departure,” she said.
Former army Commander Gen Mugisha Muntu also sent out his condolences twitting: “I have with great sadness heard of the passing of Col (Rtd) Shaban Bantariza earlier this morning. My thoughts and prayers go to his family, friends and colleagues as we grapple with his untimely death. May God strengthen you through this undoubtedly heavy loss.”
