Ugandan Boxer Juma Miiro has been assured of a medal at the ongoing 2018 commonwealth games in Gold Coast.
The younger Boxer has on Tuesday morning overcome his opponent from Kenya Shaffi Hassan in a quarter final fight at Oxenford Studios.
Miiro, fighting in the red corner, won 3-2 going by the judges’ decision to progress to the Semi finals, which is a medal bracket.
In boxing events, both losing semi-finalists win bronze, meaning that Miiro will walk away with a medal even if he loses his bout.
He therefore becomes the first Ugandan Boxer to be guaranteed of a medal at the ongoing commonwealth games.
Standing in his way in the semis is India’s Amit Panghal who defeated his opponent Aqeel Ahmed of Scotland in the other quarter final bout.
The semifinal is set for Friday, April 13.
James Odwori (gold in 1970 Edinburgh and Silver in 1974 Christchurch) and Justin Juuko (Gold in 1990 Auckland) are the only two boxers to have won a medal in the men’s light flyweight category at the Commonwealth for Uganda.
