A serious storm is expected on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday over the appointment of house back-bench commissioners.
ChimpReports has exclusively learned that the reappointment of 3 Parliament Commissioners; Peter Ogwang of Usuk, Kakumiro woman MP, Robinah Nabanja and Workers representative Arinaitwe Rwakajara by the NRM Central Executive Committee, has been rejected by a section of ruling party MPs.
The dissenting members have reportedly mobilized and prepared to block the formal reappointment of the 3 legislators on Tuesday.
“The CEC appointment has been abused. There is no longer appointment on merit but favors given to girlfriends and boyfriends,” said one of the members who asked not to be named.
When contacted on phone, Parliament’s Communication Director, Chris Obore said he was not aware of the development.
This website can reveal that two high profile meetings were scheduled on Monday evening at Parliament.
Possibly, sensing danger, the Government Chief Whip Nankabirwa entered Parliament at 5:20pm and immediately took stairs to her chambers on the 4th floor.
Ms. Nankabirwa was joined by the Commissioners at 6:00pm for a meeting to prepare for tomorrow’s storm and also faced the Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga before the showdown.
According to sources, the Government Chief Whip and the Commissioners had already booked appointment with Kadaga for a meeting expected to kickoff at 7pm.
The dissenting voices want the current system of appointment by party leaders, which has been happening since 2006, to be scrapped and powers be given to Members of Parliament to appoint Commissioners and committee chairpersons.
