City Oilers on Test in FIBA Africa Champions Cup

City Oilers’ quest to write their name in the history books of African Basketball begins tonight with a daunting uphill task in the Fiba Africa Champions cup.

City Oilers who booked their place at the continent following their triumph in the concluded Zone V tournament in lugogo, open up with hosts Etoile Sportive (ES) Rades.

As quoted by, Oilers coach Mandy Juruni believes that his side is capable of winning the top accolade.

“We are ready to go. We have been training hard and have played tough friendly games against top teams in Egypt so we are good.”

“Our expectation is to win the tournament. You do not have to play 20 times to win something. It is about preparation, hard work, belief and having a good team to compete.”

In the recent edition, City Oilers finished 9th following an early eviction from the groups that saw them lose all the four group B games.


Juruni’s side will be boosted by the addition of Adarius Pagues, Jordin Mayes, and Stanley Ocitti as the trio is expected to more experience to the locally based crop of players that has been playing in the 2017 National Basketball League.

Who is City Oilers opppnent Es Rades?

Étoile Sportive de Radès is a Tunisian professional basketball club from Radès, Tunis. The side competes in the Tunisian Division I Basketball League .

They are this year’s hosts and play their home league games at Salle couverte Taoufik-Bouhima

Es Races were runners-up in 2014, and the Tunisian champions are hosting the tournament for the first time in their basketball history.

The side has been dubbed as top favourites to clinch the title not only because they are the hosts but also because of their good roster boosted by National team players led by team captain Amine Rzig.

Defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt did not participate in the Zone 5’s qualifier in Uganda, and as a result, will not defend their continental title.
