City Oilers Face Tunisian Giants in FIBA Africa Champions Cup Quarter Finals

Monday, December 18th

City Oilers vs Monastir, 10:15 PM

In their second try at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup, the four-time Uganda Basketball League winners are at the Quarter Finals – rubbing shoulders with Africa’s elite clubs.

Oilers will tonight look to extend their stay in Tunisia when they take on Union Sportive Monastirienne (Tunisia) at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Rades.

Having lost their first three games; 64-102 against ES Rades, 81-91 against ASS and 49-67 against Inter Clube, Oilers managed to negotiate past NW Generation (60-81) and Kano Pillars (86-95).

Those two victories pushed the side into 4th hence booking a quarter final birth.

Monastir who hosted ACC Zone 1 Qualifiers missed out on automatic qualification for the Finals but benefited from a FIBA Africa wild card.

The side have managed to pull up their socks as they finished top of Pool B, winning all of their 5 games (Libolo, GSP, Beira, Mazembe and Gombe Bulls).

Oilers will look to draw inspiration from Robinson Opong who has garnered 44 points in the side’s last two games.

“First of all we are happy to be in the Quarter finals, so definitely everyone is feeling good and happy for wat we have achieved so far,” started Oilers Coach Mandy Juruni.

“Basically we want to go in the game with a lot of confidence and our theme is going to be defense, offense will take care of itself.”

Talking about tonight’s opponents, he said: “First of all we know Tunisians, they like passing the ball and move it in different areas on the court so we will try to slow down that ball and deny that next pass.”

Juruni added that size is not going to be a big problem, cos they match up pretty well

“Offensively, we have done a good job, we have created good chances and we have been relying a lot on the 3 which might not be dependable now we have to be a threat from the inside, good court spacing and quickness as well.”

With Opong, Ndikumana, Tilman, Jordin Mayez, Enabu Jimmy, Stanley Ocitti, Stephen Omony and Adarius Pegues, Oilers have enough fire power to push Monastir to the wall.
