Confederation of African Football (CAF) exclusively owns the rights to the tournaments played under their name and always set up guidelines that must be followed by participating teams.
With many partners including media partners on board, the football body on many occasions dictates what clubs or national teams must do.
It is on such ground that Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) used plain jersey last season in the group stages of the TOTAL CAF Confederation Cup last season.
KCCA FC have Startimes as their main shirt sponsor who are envisaged as direct rivals to CAF media partners Lagardere Sports and thus cannot be offered free mileage.
With such a background, KCCA FC who will be playing in the group stages of the CAF Champions League requested to have a new logo reading ‘Visit Kampala’ to replace Startimes during the continental games. This is the brain child of KCCA the administrative unit of the capital city who also own the club and the move is aimed at promoting tourism.
CAF through its General Secreatary Ahmed Fahmy wrote back to KCCA FC on Thursday approving their request.
‘Reference to the request sent by your club KCCA concerning the publicity of “Visit Kampala” on the front of the players’ jerseys, kindly be informed that the club is authorized to put the above-mentioned publicity during the matches of the TOTAL CAF Champions League 2018 on the front of the players’ jerseys.’ KCCA FC confirmed on their official website.
