Since Mbabazi’s dismissal last month, there has been concern that he reactivated his grassroot structures to mobilise and defeat President Museveni in the 2016 presidential elections.
The meeting also comes at a time when the Youth League and other party officials are calling for the removal of Mbabazi as Secretary General, saying he has abused the trust bestowed upon him by falling short of recruiting new members and popularising the Kyankwanzi resolution.
Officials say the meeting was called after CEC received several complaints and recommendations from the party`s caucus accusing Mbabazi of mismanaging the party and engaging in activities thought to be undermining the chairman.
Today’s meeting will also discuss plans to hold the party primaries ahead of the elections. Members will also brainstorm on plans to recruit new members and compile a new register.

It consists of the party chairman, first national vice chairman and the deputy, regional vice chairpersons, secretary general, and the deputy, chairpersons of the various party leagues, treasurer and the deputy and the chairperson of the electoral commission.
NRM treasurer, Singh Katongole confirmed the meeting, saying, Mbabazi wrote letters on the instructions of the party chairman inviting CEC members.
