Police in Bweyogerere has arrested two people on allegations of defacing posters of nominated candidates including President Museveni’s campaign material for the forthcoming elections.
It is alleged that the duo and others still at large defaced 10 posters and burnt two billboards of various candidates on Wednesday morning near Kazinga, Bweyogerere, Kira Municipality in Wakiso district.
According to the area Police, they received information from the local community that there were posters being defaced.
“A team of police officers were dispatched to the scene and they found billboards of presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Mamerito Mugerwa, who is a candidate for Kira Municipality Mayor, being defaced,” said Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango.
Other posters that were being destroyed include those of Isaac Senkubuge, incumbent LC III Bweyogerere, Emmanuel Katumba Senkeezi candidate for Kira Municipality constituency, Yudaya Nansubuga, candidate for LC III councilor Kazinga main, Yoweri Nkayi Mudiope, candidate for councilor LCIII Kazinga Main among others.
The exhibits were recovered to help police with investigations.
Onyango said that the suspects are being charged under section 78 (2) of the Presidential Elections Act 2005.
Meanwhile, police revealed that detectives are yet to retrieve and review CCTV footage from the area for possible identification of more perpetrators.
