Butabika Hospital To Construct Shs1.2B Staff Accommodation Facility

In a bid to improve the working environment for staffs at the National Psychiatric Referral Hospital Butabika,  government has come up with plans to construct a modern housing accommodation facility for the staffs.

The Executive Director of Butabika Hospital Dr David Basangwa told  ChimpReports that the hospital  has received  money from the government and part  of the resources will be injected in constructing staff housing facilities.

“This financial year we noticed that we had limited accommodation for the hospital staffs, which is why we found it very necessary to construct more houses for them. The government has already allocated the funds for this activity which is part of the hospitals’ capital development activities. The government has been supportive towards Butabika Hospital especially when it comes to capital development activities. This has enhanced the improvement in service delivery at the health facility,” he explained.

He noted that health workers especially those offering health services at Butabika Hospital need to be residing near the facility due to the nature of the hospitals clients who need much care from the health facility all the time.

The construction of the staff accommodation facilities at the Hospital is expected to cost the government about shs1.2 billion depending on the procurement and tendering processes.

Basangwa said that the procurement process for the construction of the three- floor structure is  already ongoing.

“We are already done with inviting bids for the project and very soon the technical people from the procurement department will commence scrutinizing the bidding documents.  When the process is done then the best bidder will be awarded the contract to construct the structure,”  he explained further.

On access to mental health services in the country, the Executive Director said the demand for the services has gone up due to the massive sensitization that the hospital has been carrying out.

He added that Butabika Hospital on daily basis handles about 750 outpatients and about 500 inpatients which he said has a huge budget implication on the hospital.

“Butabika Hospital is over populated  but  we cannot blame the general public because some are still ignorant that mental health services were decentralized by the ministry of health. The general public can access mental health services from all the regional referral hospitals spread in the country,“  he advised.

Mr. Basangwa  explained that although there are very few specialized Psychiatric experts in the country , government  through the Ministry of Health has tried to recruit  Psychiatric  clinicians and nurses  who can offer mental health services both at the regional referral hospitals and at district hospitals country wide.

Some of the regional referral hospitals where the general public can access mental health services are: Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, Arua and Kabaale Regional Referral Hospitals among others.
