Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has congratulated DRC’s president-elect, Felix Tshisekedi, praising the country’s firm stand against external interference.
“Through a fully organized electoral process with no external influence and the wisdom of President Kabila, the Democratic Republic of Congo has just defended its dignity and sovereignty,” said Nkurunziza in a brief statement on Sunday.
Tshisekedi’s election was upheld by the Constitutional Court on Sunday which ruled that the runner-up, Martin Fayulu had fallen short of providing evidence to challenge the election outcome.
“Burundi congratulates the President-elect, Felix A. Tshisekedi, as well as the step taken by the Congolese people,” said Nkurunziza.
Burundi and DRC share a border and Nkurunziza would be keen on building strong ties Tshisekedi.
Nkurunziza joins leaders of Zimbabwe, Namibia and other SADC members who have congratulated Tshisekedi on his election victory.
Earlier, Tshisekedi vowed to work for the “unity and prosperity of all Congolese”.
He further said his triumph was “a victory of Congo” which he said would be more “stable and developed.”
The swearing-in ceremony of Tshisekedi is scheduled for Tuesday, January 22, 2019.
