Bullets as Police Disperse Rioting Kigezi College Students

Live bullets and tear gas yesterday rocked Kigezi College Butobere in Kabale district as police battled students who were violently protesting suspension of their colleague.

The students went on rampage accusing the school administration of suspending Emmanuel Twesigwomwe on allegations that he led other students to bully new comers.

Some of the S1 and S5 had reported to the administration that they were being forced to pay Shs 3000 each to the bullies. Those who couldn’t pay, were reportedly beaten through the night.

Yesterday morning, after receiving the complaints from the new comers, the administration resolved to suspend Twesigwomwewho was identified as the ring leader.

This however, angered other continuing students who went on rampage and started pelting stones at teachers and buildings.

As students stormed the house of the school head teacher to burn it, police under the command of Muhammad Chewalyang, the head of Operations at Kabale Police Station Muhammad and Henry Kisembo, Field Force Unit Commander swung into action and fired tear gas and live bullets in the air to disperse them.

John Robert Osula, the school head teacher says Twesigwome has been in hiding since Monday when he assaulted one of the new students named Kato, until yesterday when he showed up for lunch and was suspended.

Osula assured parents and guardians that the school administration is investigating more of this matter to make sure that all the culprits are dealt with accordingly.
