Government of Uganda on Wednesday handed over 9 Rwandan nationals who were freed from Prison by the Makindye based General Court Martial.
These were handed to the Rwandan government by Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa, at the Kampala Serena Hotel
On behalf of Rwanda, the seven were received by the country’s Ambassador to Uganda Mag Gen Frank Mugambagye.
Those handed over include Rene Rutagungira, a Rwandan Military officer who was arrested in 2017 in Kampala, and charged with illegal repatriation of Rwandan nationals.
A former Rwandan army officer, Rutagungira’s name appeared frequently in the talking points of Rwandan officials, who in the heat of the diplomatic row between the two countries, accused Uganda of detaining Rwandan nationals without charging them in courts of law.
The Rwandans were released on Tuesday by the Court Martial chaired by Lt Gen Andrew Gutti, after receiving confirmation from the state prosecution that government had lost interest in pursuing charges against them.
The released Mugabo Nelson, Rtd Sgt Rene Rutagungira, Etienne Nsanzabahizi, Claude Yakalemye, Emmanuel Rwamuchwo, Augustine Rutayisire, CPL Nzeyamana Herman, Munyagabe Adrien and Urayeneza Gilbert
These were arrested by Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) from Isingiro, Mbarara and Kampala.
