Rwandan officials on Monday handed over the body of Sydney Muhumuza, a Ugandan national who was shot dead by Rwandan security forces in Kumugu Trading Centre in Musanze District, inside Rwanda, about five kilometres from the Uganda-Rwanda border, on Monday night last week.
Muhereza was a resident of Kahogo village, Butanda sub county Kabale district.
His body was received by Ugandan officials led by Darius Nandinda, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner, and the Kabale LC5 Chairman Patrick Besigye Keihwa at the Katuna border.
The Rwandan delegation was led by Marie Chantal Uwanyirigira, the mayor of Burera District.
The mayor said at the hand over that when Rwandan security tried to arrest Muhereza, he fought back and that he had a machete on him.
“It was unfortunate that all that happened but I ask Ugandans to always use the right channels and not porous borders” She said.
Patrick Besigye Keihwa the Kabale LC5 Chairman on the other hand called on Rwandan authorities not to rush to take out people’s lives, but to try to apprehend them, when they think they have wronged.
“We are brothers and sisters; we should stop this. If a Ugandan has committed a crime in your country, arrest them and take them to court,” he said.
The body was later handed over to relatives led by Zadock Tumuhimbise the Uganda National Teachers Union chairperson who is the uncle of the deceased.
Muhereza is now the fifth Ugandan businessman to be shot and killed in Rwanda while allegedly smuggling goods into the same country since February last year.
