Boda Boda Rider Charged for Attempting to Set Himself Ablaze
City Hall Grade one Magistrate Valerian Tuhimbise has charged Robert Kakooza, a boda boda rider also People Power supporter with attempted suicide.
It is said that Kakooza tried to set himself ablaze having failed to raise the money required to secure his motorcycle which had been confiscated by officers at Nagalama Police station.
Kakooza pleaded not guilty to these charges that were read to him, after which he asked court to release him on bail pending hearing of his case.
Having found all his sureties substantial, the Magistrate released him on bail and adjourned the matter to August 17, 2020.
It’s alleged that on July 19, 2020, Kakooza, a resident of Kasokoso Kireka in Kira Municipality Wakiso district was arrested by Police in Kayunga on his way from a burial ceremony. He was later released on Police bond but his bike remained under custody of Nagalama Police station.
Being that he didn’t have the required money to secure his bike, he went to People Power headquarters in Kamwokya for some financial support where he received only Shs 40,000 (forty thousand shillings) which reportedly raised his anger to the extent of trying to burn himself at the said premises using petrol.
However, Kira Police station was informed in time and they saved the situation before detaining Kakooza.
During the lock down, such cases have been on the increase especially among the boda boda riders protesting police actions of confiscating their motorcycles.
