The National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu alias Bobi Wine has accused the Uganda police Force in the Bugisu and Teso sub regions of using maximum force while dealing with him and his supporters during his campaigns.
On Sunday November 15, Police, starting with Bobi Wine’s first rally in Kumi district, fired teargas to disperse the people, prevented his second rally in Sironko district and also fired live bullets during his last rally in Mbale.
In Sironko district where Bobi Wine was supposed to hold his second rally, Police, led by ASP Abraham Asiimwe, fired teargas and live bullets to disperse Bobi Wine supporters who had converged to listen to him.
Bobi Wine says that Asiimwe lobbed a teargas canister inside his vehicle, which left them suffocating, including his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi, with whom he is moving during his campaign trail.
“Moments after a teargas canister was thrown inside one of the cars in which my team was travelling, Mr. Asiimwe Abraham, who previously nearly blinded me with red pepper spray, personally threw another canister inside my car and looked on with satisfaction as we all suffered under the weight of teargas,” said Bobi Wine.
He added that Asiimwe used “extreme force” on his supporters “who were peacefully matching towards the venue of our meeting.”
In the videos that were shared on social media, Asiimwe warned Bobi Wine against breaking the COVID-19 directives, converging many people without social distancing. He is later heard ordering the junior officers to “fire” which left many supporters of Bobi Wine bombarded with teargas.
“I can confidently say that the bulk of officers are not hateful and don’t even like doing the kinds of things they do, but if you keenly observe these events, there is usually a clique of three to four people who give orders to their juniors to commit these crimes,” he noted.
“The small clique is never motivated by any law but by hate and the desire to help Gen. Museveni keep a firm grip over our country which he thinks of as his empire,” he added.
In Mbale it was no different though Bobi managed to hold his rally at Mbale Crickets ground after failure in Sironko, as live bullets and teargas became the order of the day.
“We all know that Museveni is so fearful and under severe panic, but these brutal actions against Ugandans who are peacefully looking for change must stop,” he noted.
Upon his arrival in Mbale, Kachumbala and Nakaloke Town councils, Police and its sister agencies fired teargas canisters and live bullets to disperse his supporters who had gathered in large numbers to welcome him.
ChimpReports has learnt that security forces, in addition to the already functioning forces, deployed an additional Special Commanding Contingent to the eastern region to combat what they termed as chaos that would come along Bobi’s campaigns in the region.
He is slated to campaign today in Busoga sub region in areas of Mayuge, Bugiri and Iganga district
