NUP Presidential Candidate Bobi Wine is Thursday resuming his campaign in Central Region despite suffering a setback after most of his campaign team members were detained yesterday.
Bobi Wine told press this morning that he is carrying on his campaign in the districts of Bukomansimbi and Mpigi as per the electoral commission schedule.
He said he decided to leave his detained campaign team members including is personal body guard Rogers Sebuufu alias Eddy Mutwe behind, because “it is what they would have wanted.”
“(Their arrest) will not stop us because it is not about Kyagulanyi or the campaign team but the people of Uganda,” he said.
“I and the entire team promised each other not to give up but to keep moving even when one of us has been arrested or killed. I will keep going even if I am the only remaining person. So I am sure wherever they are, they are happy that we are carrying on.”
Bobi Wine says over 90 of his campaign team members were arrested on Wednesday in Kalangala.
These, he said included members of his security and medical teams as well as journalists.
He blamed the arrest on the “desire by the regime to cut our speed.”
Police however, last evening said those who were arrested were part of Bobi Wine’s advance team, who were “captured on Cctv cameras and several video footages, while deflating tyres of police motor vehicles, inciting violence, obstructing police officers on duty, violating the health and safety protocols and various traffic offences”
According to Bobi Wine, the arrested were transferred from Kalangala to Masaka Central Police Station where they are being held.
“We have been getting contradicting reports about some of them being transferred to Kampala, but we have dispatched a team of lawyers who are on the ground to secure their release,” Bobi Wine said.
