Black Monday Activists Released from Jail

Buganda road grade one Magistrate Stella Amabirisi has granted bail to six youths who were arrested by Police last week for holding an unlawful demonstration in the city centre.

The accused are Gafaayo Jimmy, Richard Kizito, Nayesiga Shalock, Kaweesa Badru and Lukwago Ashiraf.

These were released on a cash bail of Shs 200,000 each, whereas the sureties were ordered to sign a cash bond of one million shillings.

“Having fulfilled all the requirements for bail and being that the offense against all six accused persons is bailable, I am granting them bail,” she ruled.

The suspects were ordered to present original copies of their national identity cards by the next court sitting.

The matter was adjourned to 12th February for mention.

Defense counsels Gawaya Tegulle and Eron Kiiza in their submissions had asked court to grant all the accused persons non cash bail so that they can be able to enjoy their liberty pending hearing of their case.

Prosecution contends that on 13th January 2020 along Kampala and Entebbe Roads, the accused with others on remand  acted in contravention of Section 5 and 10 of the Public Management Act by holding meetings in disregard of the laid down procedures of Public Order Management Act (POMA) when they failed to coordinate with Police.
