Bigirimana Urges MPs to Support Women Fund

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Gender Labor and Social Development, about it Mr Pius Bigirimana has urged Women Members of the 10th Parliament to pick interest and start spreading the gospel of the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP) funded projects in their areas to ensure success of the program.

The program is an initiative of the Government of Uganda that is aimed at affording Ugandan women with funds to start up small businesses of their own.

Though the program, women aged 18-65 can access interest free loans to start income generation enterprises. They are required to form groups of 10 to 15 members and are expected to carry out the same enterprises as a group.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting for female MPS at Imperial Royale Hotel on Monday, Bigirimana said that it’s the role of the MPs to track the performance of the programme in their areas and provide guidance when things are not moving in the right direction.

Bigirimana emphasized that this being a women’s programme ,there is a deliberate effort to ensure that women in the categories of the unemployed, vulnerable groups such as child mothers, single young mothers, widows and gender based violence survivors ,women with disabilities ,women living with HIV/AIDS and many others can also benefit from the program.

The program started off in 20 local villages last year and this year it was extended to the entire country.
