The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has today refuted speculation that their Former President and four-time Presidential Candidate Dr Kiiza Besigye has Covid-19.
Yesterday the Party faithful were thrown into panic when Besigye attempted to explain the reason as to why he was unable to bury former Kampala Mayor Al Hajji Nasser Ntegge Sebagala.
“Fare thee well Al Hajj Nasser Ssebagala (Seya). Unfortunately, I’m in self-isolation and couldn’t personally participate in his send off. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family” Besigye posted on social media.
The post quickly sparked speculation that Besigye had contracted the deadly virus.
However, commenting on the matter today, John Kikonyogo the FDC Spokesperson clarified that Besigye was safe and sound but only taking precautionary measures after one of his contacts tested positive.
“What I can tell you is that Dr Besigye is Covid negative. What happened is that he was meeting some people where one of them turned positive. He is self-isolating because that is what he has been preaching himself as WHO has been advising us to do,” Kikonyogo disclosed.
Kikonyogo however declined to reveal the venue of Dr Besigye’s meeting and details of the contacts saying he was not privy to that information.
It remains to be seen whether this shall have an impact on Thursday’s National Council meeting that is expected to determine who will be the Party’s Presidential Flag Bearer in the 2021 General Elections.
