Charged up by their victory last week in Rukungiri district, FDC’s former Presidential candidate Col Kizza Besigye will be setting out to Bugiri Municipality to campaign for the party candidate in the oncoming parliamentary elections.
The FDC Chairperson for the Eastern Region, Salaam Musumba made the announcement on Monday and revealed that the party has already dispatched task force teams led by party big wigs to garner support for the FDC candidates in the different elective positions.
The Bigiri Municipality parliamentary seat is also being eyed by the Justice Forum (JEEMA) President, Asuman Basalirwa, who believes that having relentlessly supported the FDC, they should let him take the seat.
Basalilwa had suggested that the opposition parties should front him as a joint candidate.
Musumba said however, that despite several engagements with their counterparts at JEEMA, a decision was reached to have the FDC candidate Eunice Namatembe nominated for the seat.
“We wanted to use a random sampling method so as to arrive at a suitable candidate but the method wasn’t agreeable to our colleagues. We couldn’t as a party recall our candidate without a basis it would be like usurping the powers of the electorate,” Musumba said.
We regret the failure to reach a consensus but we must continue with the elections.
Musumba added that they are optimistic that their candidate will be the choice of the voters.
“My candidate has contested twice in the elections of woman MP in Bugiri. Last time she won and her victory was stolen at the tally center,” Musumba said.
“Our candidate starts from a base of 40,000 votes, the one who was declared winner was declared with 42,000 votes, why wouldn’t I say she is a strong candidate.
“The team that is going for nominations in Bugiri will be led by Dr. Besigye who will be joined by Wafula Oguttu, Wasswa Birigwa and myself.”
