Besigye Bail Hearing Paralyzes Work in City Center

As High Court Judge Justice Masalu commenced the hearing of the bail application by the jailed former FDC presidential candidate Rtd Dr Kizza Besigye, approved business in several parts of Kampala came to halt as security personnel took over the streets.

Traffic was paralyzed as all roads connecting to the High court criminal division were closed by traffic police.

Anti riot and Military Police were deployed in large numbers at High Court, the City Square and various road blocks were stationed at various junctions, letting through only a few officials and journalists.

People working around the High Court had one option of using Kyagwe Road near Watoto Church connecting to Buganda road where only pedestrians were allowed. George Street and Lumumba Avenue were closed and those using it from Wandegeya were diverted to Kampala Road.

Vehicles coming from the Nakasero State Lodge were blocked at Shell petrol station by both traffic and military officers manning the road block.

A source also informed us at work at the Kampala Central Police Station was halted.

Many people affected by these roadblocks who had to wait for hours in traffic jam angrily responded to the measures.

“Because of one person you can’t close all roads without issuing any warning to us the road users,” a road used complained.
