James Akena, a Photo Journalist working with Reuters News Agency has been confined to a wheelchair after he reportedly suffered a partial paralysis.
Akena was brutally beaten by UPDF soldiers in August last year in downtown Kampala, while he covered protests against the arrest of Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi.
Akena revealed in a social Media post, “Finally, their brutality last August lands me in a wheelchair,” he captioned the pictures of him in a health facility being wheeled.’’
Footage Akena being clobbered by the UPDF soldiers caused a lot of outrage on social media.
It attracted international condemnation from International Media Organization and Human Rights Defenders who called on the Ugandan Government to act and get the culprits to book.
Akena has since sued the Government for damages.
Various Reports released by Human Rights Network for Journalist-Uganda shows that security officials led by the Police are the biggest violators of the rights of Journalists to report freely.
