Basketball U19: Junior Gazelles Leap Past Tanzania To Start Bright

Uganda Under-19 national girls’ basketball team, the Junior Gazelles, started their campaign for a place in the FIBA Africa U16 with a commanding 58-39 victory over Tanzania.

The Tanzanians started the tournament well by beating hosts, Rwanda, 74-63 on Monday but failed to catch up with the tactical Gazelles on Tuesday.

Uganda started the game well by controlling the first quarter 18-9. Tanzania improved in the second to win it 15-11 and cut the gap to only five from 9.

However, Coach Harriet Lubowa’s girls pumped up to demolish the Tanzanians 16-2 in the third before equaling strength 13-13 in the last.

Uganda now needs to replicate the same performance and beat Rwanda on Wednesday to go through.

The boys’ team start their games today against Rwanda at 7 PM.
