Men: Kenya 56-62 Uganda
Uganda’s senior Men (Silverbacks) and Women (Gazelles) teams picked victories over Kenya counterparts in friendlies played on Friday evening at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
The friendlies were organised to fine tune the teams ahead of their qualifiers for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and the African Championships.
The Gazelles won 80-57 before the Silverbacks cruised to a 62-56 hard fought victory.
In the Men’s game, Uganda led the first quarter 21-15 before for hosts bounced back to take the second quarter 15-9 and level the score 30-30 at the long break.
Mandy Juruni’s charges came back in the second half charged as the team won the third and last quarter 19-14 and 13-12 to seal the victory.
James Okello scored a game high 13 points. Geoffrey Soro and Jimmy Enabu managed 10 points each. Joseph Ikong and Stephen Omony had nine points each as the team shot 23/58 on field.
Valentine Nyakinda scored 12 points for Kenya while Brian Namake and William Ocheng contributed 10 points each.
The Gazelles on the hand, led the first quarter 23-19 before taking a 47-38 lead at the long break. The side maintened a nine point gap after the third quarter (60-51) before thumping 20-6 in the last quarter to seal a dominant 80-57 win.
Ritah Imanishimwe scored a game high 16 points, Martha Soigi (12) and Brenda Ekone reached double point figures. Sarah Ageno produced 10 rebounds, Zainah Lokwameri also shot 3/4 on the field in an impressive performance.
Melisa Akinyi and Belinda Akoth scored 13 and 11 points respectively for the host nation.
