US based International lawyer Robert Amsterdam who was banned from entering Uganda, yesterday met with his client Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) in neighboring Kenya.
Mr Amsterdam of Amsterdam & Partners LLP, traveled from the US to meet his Bobi Wine and two other members of the MP’s legal team; Nicholas Opiyo and Karamagi.
The meeting in the Kenyan capital Nairobi was, according to Counsel Opiyo, meant to discuss strategy of the ongoing treason case before the Gulu Chief Magistrates Court.
“Because one of the lawyers has been declared persona non grata (PNG) by the Ugandan regime, part of our legal team strategy meeting had to be held in Nairobi, Kenya,” Opiyo tweeted on Saturday.
“Defending rights has a huge cost we must all pay.”
Mr Amsterdam was in late August declared by government as a persona non grata, which implies that he is prohibited from entering Uganda.
This was days after the US based lawyer joined Bobi Wine’s legal team mainly to provide technical, advisory and research assistance.
The lawyer says he and his team are pursuing among others Visa bans for some of the Ugandan officials implicated in the alleged arrest and torture of Hon Bobi Wine and dozens of other people during the election violence in Arua.
Amsterdam says he is also pushing the United States Government to stop funding particularly Uganda’s security budget.
Bobi Wine, earlier in the week, traveled to Kenya where he among others attended a parliamentary session and held media interviews.
Today he is expected to address Kenyans and Ugandans living in Kenya at a Forum at the KCB Sports Club in Nairobi.
