Aswa Police Directs DPCs On Handling Dead Bodies

Police in Aswa region have directed the various District Police Commanders [DPCs] and their unit commanders to always take dead bodies of unidentified victims to their various health centers.

In a press statement, Aswa Regional Police Public Relations Officer Jimmy Patrick Okema said all units Commanders have been directed to take unclaimed dead bodies of unidentified persons to the various health units in their districts.

This directive follows last week’s incidence where Police Officers from Amuru dumped a dead body of an unidentified person in front of Gulu Hospital Mortuary which led to a massive demonstration by locals.

Okema said that bringing all unclaimed dead bodies to Gulu Hospital will give a “very big burden to Gulu Municipal authorities who normally have a fixed budget to bury unclaimed bodies’’

Mr. Okema added that the Police does not have a cold room to keep dead bodies adding that they only work with Government facilities which have cold rooms to do a Post-mortem on the dead bodies.

Mr. Simon Peter Oola, the Gulu district Vice Chairperson speaking to the Media, apologized to the Public for the chaos on Saturday adding that Gulu district and the Municipal authorities are working with officials from the Ministry of Health to repair and renovate Gulu Mortuary.
