Army Speaks Out on Arrest of Ugandan in Rwanda

A Ugandan national identified as Edward Kabagambe, 22, was last weekend arrested by Rwanda authorities for illegal crossing.

Authorities say Kabagambe crossed to the Rwandan side at around 21:00hours on Friday, before he was arrested.

Kabagambe is a resident of Mayengo cell, Kiniogo ward, in Katuna Town Council, Kabale district.

He is said to have helped two Rwandan nationals carrying their luggage from Mayengo cell through an illegal crossing point to Mukatokye village in Gatuna sub county Gicumbi district in Rwanda, and was arrested by Rwandan Defence Forces.

According to Elly Maate, the Police spokesman in the region, the family of Kabagambe after waiting for him in vain informed Police, who in turn informed the UPDF.

Speaking to ChimpReports on Saturday, Major Charles Kabona the UPDF’s  2nd Division spokesman said residents had long been warned against illegal crossings to Rwanda.

“Everyone knows our borders are closed and therefore whoever is sneaking out of the country through porous borders is doing it on their own,” he said.

“I call upon the people to desist from crossing to neighbouring countries through porous entry points.”
