The Alliance of National Transformation President, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu and his team visited the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga on Tuesday.
Muntu, accompanied by the party Convener, Alice Alaso and Jinja East Member of Parliament Paul Mwiru, who recently joined the party after quitting the Forum for Democratic Change, want ANT to be officially put on the records of Parliament.
Kadaga, in a statement, said ANT also wants to join the membership of the Inter-party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD).
“Leaders of the Alliance for National Transformation party (ANT) have paid a courtesy call on me at Parliament. Key issues of concern include membership to the Interparty Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD),” said Kadaga.
IPOD membership consists of parties represented in Parliament including; National Resistance Movement (NRM), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Democratic Party (DP), UPC and Justice Forum (JEEMA). Recently MPs from the FDC and NRM have crossed to ANT and National Unity Party acquired by the Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi.
Speaker Kadaga said the crossing of MPs from one party to another is still going to be subjected to legal consultation and examination.
“I will consult widely, especially on the issue of MPs that have since crossed from one party to the other; including the ANT party. The current law allows any MP to cross during the last 6 months of Parliament’s tenure,” said Kadaga.
The Parliament’s legal directorate and the Uganda Law Society are among the entities going to examine the matter.
“We shall discuss whether Parliament can immediately change the register and recognize the said MPs. The stakeholders will include Parliament’s Legal Dept; the Uganda Law Society; and others,” said Kadaga.
