The incumbent chairman of Ibanda District in Western Uganda, Mr Melcheadis Kajwengye has announced he will not be seeking reelection next year.
Kajwengye announced Tuesday evening that he was pulling out of the race on medical grounds.
Having served as the district chairman since it was curved out of Mbarara 15 years ago, Kajwengye was a clear favorite in next year’s election.
However, while appearing on a local radio station this evening, he announced that he was stepping aside to tend to his poor health.
“To my agents who have been working hard, I am sorry. I did not want this to come from anyone elese,” he said.
“I know that you liked me, but you can only like me when I’m alive. I am still young and I could have continued to serve, but my health has not permitted. I need to spend more time getting medical attention.”
Kajwengye also endorsed one of his council members Mr Happy Mayanja, whom he said would ably carry on with his development plans.
Mr Mayanja is the current district speaker.
Kajwegye, a brother to Karamoja Affairs Minister Eng John Byabagambi previously served as the Works Secretary in Mbarara District Council before it was split up.
