The Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempija has praised seed companies for supporting and motivating farmers.
Speaking at the opening of the agriculture national trade show organized by his Ministry and Uganda National Farmers Federation taking place in Jinja, Ssempija underscored the role being played by seed companies in enhancing food and commercial agriculture.
The Minister launched the farmers’ package, an initiative of the Equator Seeds Company giving excelling farmers awards including motorcycles, bicycles, television sets and additional seeds to embrace good agronomic practices.
“This (farmers’ package) is motivating and good for our farmers because government priorities now is commercial agriculture and can only be achieved through good agronomic practices and mobilizing the locals,” said Ssempija.
The seed company proprietor Tonny Okello said some farmers get seeds from government under Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) only to store them poorly in their undesignated house adversely affecting the germination quality.
“This campaign main agenda is to ensure that farmers who get seeds and seedling procured by government, plant in time and help take care of their gardens so that value for money is realized,” said Okello.
