Security has been heightened at the Mbale High Court where five judges of the Constitutional Court are sitting to determine the Petition challenging last year’s Constitutional Amendment removing the Presidential Age Limit.
Both plain clothed and uniformed police officers have been deployed to guard the court premises which were earlier searched and cleared by police sniffer dogs.
Traffic has also been diverted, with no passenger vehicles allowed on the road near the court.
In today’s hearing, 13 issues are to be determined by the Constitutional court including whether it’s lawful for the current Mps and LC5 chairpersons to extend their tenure of office from 5-7 years, the invasion of security personnel in parliamentary chambers during the debating of the age-limit bill and whether or not the whole process that led to the passing of the entire Bill was lawful among others .
The age-limit law which lifted the maximum presidential age-limit cap from 75 was assented to by President Yoweri Museveni on the 27th/December 2018.
The 5 judges on the panel are DCJ Alfonse Owiny -Dollo, Remmy Kasule , Kenneth Kakuru, Elizabeth Musoke and Cheborin Barishaki.
